Hotly Debated Election Bill Scheduled To Come Before State House
According to NC Newsline, North Carolina elections bill that has sparked strong debate was expected to come before the state House this week after clearing the House Rules Committee.
Supporters say House Bill 958 is designed to strengthen election security by expanding post-election audits and requiring military and overseas voters to include photo identification with mailed ballots or explain why they cannot.
According to the published report, Opponents argue the measure could make it harder for eligible voters—especially military personnel and Americans living overseas—to cast ballots. Several controversial provisions, including a ban on ranked-choice voting and additional residency documentation requirements for overseas voters, were removed before the committee vote.
The bill passed the Rules Committee by a 14-to-9 vote, with some Republicans joining Democrats in opposition. House Speaker Destin Hall says lawmakers expect to vote on the measure next week, with additional changes still possible.
