One person was killed in a three-vehicle accident in Watauga County yesterday (November 21). The deceased is 77-year-old Sarah May Watson of Zionville, North Carolina.
At about 3:35 p.m. Tuesday, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the crash scene on U.S. Highway 421 near Silverleaf Road. A 2001 Subaru Legacy was northbound on Highway 421 when it crossed the center-line and collided head-on with a southbound 2004 Toyota Camry. The impact caused the Camry to collide with a 2021 Subaru Outback that was also traveling south on Highway 421.
Ms. Watson, who was driving the Legacy, passed away at the scene. A passenger in the Legacy was transported by E.M.S. to Watauga Medical Center in Boone with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Camry, a 58-year-old male from Tennessee, was taken to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Outback, a 73-year-old Newland man, was not injured.
The initial investigation does not indicate impairment or speed to be contributing factors. During the on-scene investigation, Highway 421 was closed in the area for approximately two hours. No charges will be filed.
