The Burke County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident last night (October 15) in which a young child was shot and critically injured.

At about 8:25 p.m. Sunday, the Sheriff’s Office took a call regarding a subject suffering from a gunshot wound at the River Valley Baptist Church on Conley Bumgarner Road in Morganton. Burke County Emergency Communications notified responding Officers that the victim was an approximately two-year-old child who had been shot in the head.

Officers secured the scene. Emergency Medical Personnel assessed the patient and promptly requested helicopter transport by MedCenter Air to Carolinas Medical Center (C.M.C. Main) in Charlotte. At last report, the injured child was undergoing surgery and was listed in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing. More information will be released as the investigation develops.
