Man Charged With Murder In Connection To Death Of Woman In Catawba County (updated with victim’s name, 2:24 p.m. 1/7/24)

47-year-old Wilbern Carlos Springs of 2nd Street Place SW in Hickory was arrested today (January 7) by Catawba County Sheriff’s Officers. He’s charged with first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping.

Springs is charged in connection to the death of 45-year-old Yolanda Burrell. The victim was reportedly killed in a domestic incident Saturday (January 6). On Saturday, deputies with the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a domestic dispute at a residence in the 4000 block of Deal Road in Claremont. When deputies arrived they encountered an adult male armed with a firearm. That person went back into the residence in question when approached by deputies.

As additional deputies arrived, they confirmed that the person initially encountered by police stated to a family member that another person was deceased inside the residence. With that information deputies and officers with Catawba County’s Special Tactics and Response (STAR) Team made immediate entry into home.

Once inside, deputies confirmed that an adult female was deceased inside the residence. The adult male initially encountered by law enforcement was being treated at a local hospital for injuries he received prior to law enforcement coming into contact with him.

Although Catawba County inmate records show a listed address for Springs on 2nd Street Place SW, the Sheriff’s Office news release stated that the suspect and victim lived together at the Deal Road residence. The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is investigating this incident.

Wilbern Carlos Springs was being held in the Catawba County Detention Facility without bond. A District Court date is scheduled Monday (January 8).
