Woman Arrested After Vehicle Crashes Into Building

25-year-old Morgan Tiara Smith of Morganton was arrested today (June 23) by Morganton Public Safety Officers. She’s charged with felony possession of schedule II controlled substance, possession of schedule VI controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while impaired, careless and reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane control.

At approximately 12:15 a.m., Officers from the Morganton Department of Public Safety responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries at 1301 East Union Street. Upon arrival, they found a heavily damaged vehicle that had collided with a building at that address.

Emergency personnel extracted the driver from the vehicle and transported her to a nearby medical facility. She was identified as Morgan Tiara Smith. Following further investigation, Smith was charged with the previously mentioned offenses.

City officials responded to the crash scene and declared the building unsafe to enter. Speed and impairing substances were suspected to be contributing factors to the crash. Smith was not listed as an inmate in Burke County. Her first court appearance is scheduled for September 20.
