Winter Weather Threat Results In Schedule Changes For Schools, Government

The threat of winter weather today (February 18) has resulted in some changes in the local school system schedules. The Catawba County, Hickory Public, Newton-Conover, Alexander County, and Caldwell County Schools will all have a remote learning day for students and staff. The Burke County Schools are closed for all in-person and remote learning with an optional teacher workday.

In the Newton-Conover system Kid Connection is closed, and in the Catawba County Schools there will be no Quest. Meals on Wheels of Catawba County has cancelled meal deliveries for today. Meal recipients or volunteers who have questions about deliveries may call Catawba County Senior Nutrition Services at (828) 695-5610. District Court is cancelled today for Catawba, Burke, and Caldwell Counties.

Catawba County government facilities, including parks and libraries, will open at 10 a.m. Facilities that normally open at 10 a.m. or later will operate on their usual schedule. The COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic at the Hickory Metro Convention Center will operate from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Individuals scheduled between 7 and 10 a.m. will be able to come any time between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. to be worked in for their vaccinations.

Those who are not comfortable coming on Thursday can call the COVID-19 Vaccine Appointment Scheduling Line at 828-695-6650 beginning Monday, February 22, to reschedule their appointment. Residents are encouraged to check the Catawba County website (www.catawbacountync.gov) or the County’s social media channels (Facebook and Twitter) for updates as conditions are evaluated Thursday. Alexander County Government Offices will open at 12 p.m. today.
