Wild Mustangs Roaming Iredell County Prompt Safety Warning

A herd of wild mustangs remains on the loose in parts of Iredell County, prompting an ongoing response from county and state agencies. According to the  Iredell Free News, Iredell County Animal Services, working alongside the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, continues efforts to safely locate and contain approximately 10 horses that escaped from a local property on Monday, May 11.

The animals have reportedly been spotted in the areas of Eufola Road and Lewis Ferry Road, as well as near major highways including Interstate 40 and Highway 70. Officials are urging motorists to use extreme caution, especially during dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours when visibility is reduced.

County officials say public safety remains the top priority as crews patrol affected areas and respond to citizen reports. Authorities also reminded livestock owners that they are legally responsible for securing their animals. Due to what officials described as a failure to properly confine the horses and cooperate with recovery efforts, both owners are facing misdemeanor charges for allowing livestock to run at large.

Residents are being warned not to approach or attempt to capture the mustangs, as doing so could frighten the animals and push them into traffic or hazardous terrain.

Anyone who spots the remaining horses is asked to immediately contact Iredell County Animal Services or local law enforcement.
