Welfare Check Leads To Drug Charges, Seizure Of Meth

34-year-old Katlynn Amanda McGovern, who is listed as a homeless person from Morganton was arrested by Morganton Public Safety Officers. She’s charged with felony possession of schedule II controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

On April 23, shortly after 7 p.m., a Public Safety Officer was called to Morganton Heights Boulevard regarding a welfare check on an individual. Upon arrival at the scene, the officer spoke with the suspect, McGovern, who was initially unaware that the officer had walked up to her vehicle. McGovern told the officer that she was okay, she was just sitting on her phone. The officer learned that there was a warrant for her arrest for possession of schedule II controlled substance.

During the investigation, the officer seized one gram of methamphetamine. In addition to the possession of schedule II controlled substance warrant, McGovern was previously charged with offenses including multiple counts of felony probation violation. According to the North Carolina Department Of Adult Correction Offender Public Information website, McGovern has convictions in Burke County in 2020 and 2021 for felony possession of schedule II controlled substance.

McGovern was brought to the Burke County Jail and incarcerated under $20,000 secured bond. District Court dates are scheduled for May 2, May 16 and June 28. A Superior Court appearance is set for June 5.
