Wednesday Morning COVID-19 Update: Death, Outbreak Reported In Catawba County, All Four Hickory Metro Counties Report Cases

Catawba County Public Health reported a COVID-19 death Tuesday (August 18), increasing the total to 36 since the start of the coronavirus outbreak. 21 new cases were confirmed Tuesday in Catawba County as well, upping the total to 2,367. There were 20 people hospitalized in the county, one more than Monday (August 17).

Catawba County Public Health is investigating a newly identified outbreak of COVID-19 at Elmcroft of Newton, where two residents and one staff member have tested positive for the virus. This is the 11th congregate care facility outbreak identified in Catawba County. In a congregate living setting, a COVID-19 outbreak is defined as two or more laboratory-confirmed cases.

18 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Alexander County Tuesday, increasing the total to 342, with two deaths. The Alexander County Health Department reported that 55 people were in quarantine, five were in the hospital and at least 280 patients have recovered.

17 new cases of the coronavirus were confirmed in Burke County Tuesday, upping the total to 1,875, with 30 deaths. There were 11 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Burke County and at least 1,562 patients had recovered. Five new cases of the coronavirus were confirmed in Caldwell County Tuesday, making the total 1,310, with 18 deaths. There were 19 people hospitalized and at least 716 patients had recovered.
