The City of Newton reported a wastewater spill that released more than 24,000 gallons of untreated wastewater into Hildebran Creek earlier this week.

According to city officials, an estimated 24,295 gallons of untreated wastewater were discharged at 1425 West N.C. 10 into Hildebran Creek in the Catawba River Basin. The spill was caused by a pipe failure that was discovered during a routine inspection at approximately 9:50 a.m. Thursday (May 28).

City crews contained the discharge by 12:45 p.m. the same day and established a bypass around the damaged pipe while repairs were completed.

Officials said no negative impacts to water quality or the surrounding environment were observed following the incident. Representatives with the North Carolina Division of Water Resources were notified of the discharge on Friday (May 29) as required by state law.
