Van Turns in Front of Newton Police S.U.V.; No Serious Injuries

At about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (June 25), a Newton Police Officer was involved in an accident on Business Highway 321, near West 20th Street.

The accident occurred as the driver of a northbound Chrysler van on Business 321 attempted to turn left into the Walmart Neighborhood Market parking lot. The van turned in front of a southbound 2020 Newton Police Department Ford Explorer. At the time of the collision, the Officer was responding to a call with the vehicle’s emergency equipment activated.

The driver of the Chrysler, 78-year-old Daniel Walton Hawkins of Asheville, and a passenger were transported by E.M.S. to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Officer, 23-year-old Joshua Dean Talbert, was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol’s initial investigation does not indicate impairment or speed to be contributing factors. Hawkins was charged with failure to yield the right-of-way. During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was partially shut down for approximately one hour.
