31-year-old Jonathan Leroy Poplin of Woodlawn Avenue SW in Valdese was arrested Tuesday (August 4) by Burke County Sheriff’s Officers. He was charged with felony discharging a weapon in an occupied dwelling.
Burke County deputies were dispatched at 8:48 a.m. Tuesday to an address on Crump Park Road in Morganton. Screams were heard and shots were reportedly being fired at that location. While deputes were enroute, the suspect, Jonathan Leroy Poplin, and a woman left the scene in a light blue van. The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office was notified the suspect may be headed to Caldwell County.
After arriving at the scene, Burke County patrol deputies learned that Poplin had allegedly discharged a firearm into a mobile home that was occupied by three people, none of those individuals was struck. While Burke County officers were processing the crime scene, the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office found the suspect’s van on Pony Court in Caldwell County.
Deputies were told that Poplin ran into the woods. Burke County detectives went to Caldwell County and seized the suspect’s van. Caldwell County deputies apprehended the suspect and arrested him. He was turned over to Burke County detectives. Poplin was placed in jail in Morganton under $50,000 secured bond. A District Court appearance is scheduled Thursday (August 6).
