Update Provided On Roads Closed Due To November Storm In Alexander County

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has provided an update on the roads that are or were at one time closed due to flooding on November 12 in Alexander County. According to Jason Willis, Staff Maintenance Engineer for Division 12, the total damage is estimated at $5.7 million. Millersville Road at N.C. Highway 16 South and Nester Road at Millersville Road both reopened on December 18.

Alexander Bridge #3 on Cheatham Ford Road which was washed out at bridge end bent is currently under contract for bridge replacement; the estimated completion date is December 2021. 7858 Cheatham Ford Road, which is closed at the bridge pipe location is currently under contract for pipe replacement.

2535 Rocky Springs Road, which was a total roadway washout at the bridge pipe location, will be worked on in the new year. Macedonia Church Road at Glade Creek, which was a total roadway washout at the bridge pipe location will also be worked on in the new year. Work for both of these locations can begin on January 5 to replace pipes.

958 Sulphur Springs Road, which was a total roadway washout at the bridge pipe location, is currently under contract for pipe replacement. Sloan Road, which sustained a washout of a 30” maintenance pipe, has been undermined and unsafe to pass. The road is closed and detoured. It’s currently under contract for pipe replacement.

1949 Berea Church Quincy Road which was a total roadway washout at the bridge pipe location is currently under contract for pipe replacement. 591 Berea Church Quincy Road which was a total roadway washout at the 48” maintenance pipe location is also currently under contract for pipe replacement.

Rocky Face Church Road at Pressley Court, which was a total roadway washout at the bridge pipe location, will be assessed at an on-site pre-bid meeting scheduled for January 7 for pipe replacement. Old Wilkesboro Road at Jaycee Park Loop which was a total roadway washout at the bridge pipe location) – utility conflict being addressed with utility contractors (power, cable, communications) in order to proceed with contract pipe replacement.

Hopewell Church Road at Mill Creek, which was a washout at the bridge pipe location, is currently under contract for pipe replacement. 1069 Lackey Mountain Road, a roadway washout at the 48” maintenance pipe location, will be assessed at an on-site pre-bid meeting scheduled for January 7 for pipe replacement.

Regarding Smith Grove Church Road, which was a total washout of the 48” maintenance pipe, the NCDOT will begin pipe replacement on January 4. And Jud Smith Road at Marlowe Road, where a 48” maintenance pipe is undermined making the road unsafe to pass, an on-site pre-bid meeting is scheduled for January 7 for pipe replacement.
