23-year-old Christopher Gage Handy of Turnersburg Highway and 32-year-old Derek Kane Smith of Fieldstone Circle, both from Statesville, were arrested by Iredell County Sheriff’s Officers. Handy is charged with three felony counts apiece of breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering along with a single felony count of interfere with a jail or prison fire system. Smith is charged with two felony counts apiece of breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering.
According to information released Tuesday (September 1), on August 3, 2020, Patrol Deputies with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office responded to Shumaker Drive in reference to a golf cart which had been found. It was hidden in the woods behind a residence. When the deputies arrived on scene, they spotted several tools on the golf cart. During the investigation, detectives canvassed the neighborhood, where they learned several of individuals had heard a golf cart in the area, but were unable to see who was driving it. The golf cart and tools were seized and the cart was towed.
Detectives learned that Patrol Deputies had come into contact with a black golf cart in the area of Monticello Road in the early morning hours August 2. The two men on the golf cart were identified as Christopher Gage Handy and Derek Kane Smith. On August 4, the Sheriff’s Office was notified by Affordable Towing about a breaking and entering and larceny of the golf cart and the tools which had been recovered the previous day.
Investigators went to the business and found a black golf cart behind a building on Turnersburg Highway. It was confirmed to be the golf cart was the same one stolen from Affordable Towing. The golf cart was found at Handy’s address. Detectives then applied for a search warrant for the property to seize the golf cart and tools.
Additional reports were received regarding additional break-ins in the area of Turnersburg Highway. Detectives identified stolen property which was seized during the search at Handy’s residence, and returned these items to the owners. The value of the recovered property was $2,070. Handy was arrested on August 9. On August 26 Smith was located by Warrant Squad Deputies. When the officers approached the home, Smith climbed out a window and fled on foot. After a short foot chase, Smith was taken into custody. Handy’s bond was set at $66,000 secured, Smith received a $20,000 secured bond.
