Two Busted in Iredell with 118 Pounds of Suspected Fentanyl

44-year-old Lorenzo Juan Arreola of New Mexico and 33-year-old Lucio Eduardo Chavira-Avila of Mexico have both been arrested by Iredell County Sheriff’s Officers. They were each charged with trafficking opium or heroin.

They were arrested yesterday (December 10) after Officers stopped a 2014 Freightliner tractor-trailer on Interstate 77 for a traffic violation. They were traveling from Charlotte to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a load of tile. During the traffic stop, K-9 Deputy Groot, who is trained in detecting narcotics, gave a positive indication to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.

Deputies searched the tractor-trailer and found 118 pounds of suspected fentanyl, possibly mixed with cocaine. The also found more than $100,000 inside the tractor cab. The total street value of the drugs seized is approximately $3,752,000.

Arreola and Avila were taken to the Iredell County Detention Center where they were each given a $3.5-million secured bond. The Sheriff’s Office is working with federal authorities to confirm the suspects’ immigration status. No court dates are currently listed.

K-9 Deputy Groot was purchased using asset forfeiture money from drug dealers.
