36-year-old Jennifer Burton Sprinkle and 40-year-old Shane Collins Barrett, both of the same address on 37th Street Drive S.W., have been arrested in connection to an armed robbery that occurred this morning (August 21) at the Family Dollar store on Springs Road N.E. in Hickory. Sprinkle was charged with felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and robbery with a dangerous weapon. Barrett faces felony charges for aiding & abetting armed robbery and fleeing to elude arrest. They were both charged with misdemeanor resisting, delaying, or obstructing a public officer.
Events leading to their arrests began as Hickory Police took an armed robbery call just before 10 a.m. today. Two suspects, one with a handgun, obtained cash from the business. The suspects then fled the scene in a gray mini-van.
Officers spotted the vehicle a few minutes later. Police attempted to stop the van, which didn’t come to a stop until it turned onto 17th Street N.E. During the stop, one Hickory Police Officer sustained minor injuries when he was struck by the suspect vehicle as it resumed movement. The Officer was transported and treated for his injuries.
The suspects fled on foot into a wooded area, but were taken into custody at about 10:35 a.m. According to H.P.D.’s arrest reports, Sprinkle and Barrett were each in possession of a firearm at the time of their arrests. They were both placed in the Catawba Co. Detention Facility with bond for each set at $100,000, secured. They will make first appearances in District Court Monday (August 24) in Newton.
