Town Records Confirm Long View Fire Chief Terminated

LONG VIEW, N.C. (WHKY) – The Town of Long View confirms that Fire Chief James Brinkley’s employment with the town was terminated effective September 4, 2026. According to public records released by the town, Brinkley’s termination involved several allegations concerning his conduct and job responsibilities.

The records received by WHKY cite discourteous treatment of other employees, including negative or divisive comments directed toward coworkers, supervisors, or the organization.

The town also cited detrimental personal conduct, including an August 21 incident involving a house fire. According to the records, Brinkley was on administrative leave at the time but responded to a house fire he witnessed while acting in a civilian capacity. The town says Brinkley forced open the door of the home to search for victims but was not wearing protective equipment, including turnout gear or a self-contained breathing apparatus.

The records state that Brinkley was overcome by smoke and required medical treatment, although he did not suffer extensive injuries. The town said his actions could have placed him in danger and potentially put additional firefighters at risk as they attempted to assist him.

The town’s records also cite incidents involving an alleged refusal to perform assigned duties, violations of work rules and regulations, and serious malfeasance of work responsibilities.

Finally, the town cited personal behavior that it said severely damaged Brinkley’s credibility with staff and citizens, rendering him ineffective in his assigned duties.

The allegations and findings described above are from Town of Long View public records concerning Brinkley’s termination.
