Town Of Catawba To Remove License-Plate Cameras
CATAWBA, N.C. (WHKY) — Automated license-plate reader cameras will be removed from the Town of Catawba after the Town Council declined a request to continue funding the technology.
Catawba Police Chief Brian Bixby says the town and its police department tested five Flock Safety cameras during a 60-day trial. The cameras photograph license plates and other visible vehicle characteristics that investigators can search while working criminal cases.
Bixby supported keeping the technology after the trial. The council, however, declined the funding request, including a reduced proposal of approximately $3,000 for one camera.
Because the council did not approve continued funding, the town did not enter into a permanent agreement with Flock Safety. The cameras will now be removed.
Supporters say license-plate readers can help police locate stolen vehicles, missing people and suspects. Critics have raised concerns about privacy, access to information collected by the cameras and how that data may be shared.
