Top Ranked LR Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Adelphi

The No. 1 Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Lacrosse Team improved to 5-0 and earned their third straight win over a top 10 team in the nation with a suffocating performance against No. 5 Adelphi, winning 7-3. The Bears allowed just three goals, the fewest since allowing two to Coker on March 5, 2022. The 10 combined goals for the two teams  makes it the lowest scoring game since LR beat Lincoln Memorial 8-0 on February 28, 2015.

Evan Voss got the Bears off to a hot start with a goal 58 seconds in. Voss’ second would come 2:16 into the game as LR took a quick 2-0 edge. That’s all the scoring there would be in the opening stanza as the defenses settled in.

Kyle Hatcher would score back-to-back goals just 1:02 apart with Caison Dillon and Brandon Webster getting assists as LR jumped up 4-0 at the 6:45 mark of the second quarter. The Panthers would break through at the 5:06 mark of the second quarter as the game would be 4-1 at the break.

Dillon, Will Canata and Donovan Powell scored three straight in the third quarter as LR jumped ahead 7-1. Adelphi would score one in the third and one in the fourth but could never get much closer.

The Panthers held a 38-36 edge in shots in the game but only put 15 on goal compared to 20 by LR. Rob Pensabene made 12 saves to earn his fourth win of the year. Dylan Renner made 13 stops in a losing effort.

Nate Ashley and Joey Masson each caused two turnovers while Matthew Mancini went 8-of-11 on face offs and grabbed six ground balls. Victor Powell added four ground balls.

All three meetings in matchup history have taken place at LR. The first two were one-goal affairs with each side winning once before today’s 7-3 result. LR didn’t allow a goal on Adelphi’s four man-up opportunities.

This is just the second 5-0 start to a season in program history. LR also started 5-0 in 2021. That season, LR won its first nine straight. The Bears have won seven straight over ranked opponents.

The Bears are 5-0 to start the season and will return to action on Saturday as they kick off SAC play with a game against Anderson at 4 p.m.
