Thursday COVID-19 Update: Deaths Reported In Catawba, Caldwell Counties, More Than 100 New Cases Weds. In Hickory Metro

Three new COVID-19 deaths were reported to Catawba County Public Health over a 24 hour period earlier this week, bringing the county’s total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 20. All three individuals were hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions. None were from congregate care settings. Two of the individuals were in their 70s and one was in their 80s.

47 new cases of the coronavirus were reported Wednesday (July 22) by Catawba County Public Health, increasing the overall total to 1,615. Approximately 11.5% of the coronavirus tests in Catawba County have been positive. The COVID-19 death rate among those who test positive is approximately 1.6% in Catawba. Hospitalizations fell to 24 Wednesday, down from 28 Tuesday (June 21)

The Caldwell County Health Department was informed of the county’s tenth COVID-19-related death Wednesday. The patient was over the age of 75 and had been hospitalized. They did have underlying health conditions. The patient was not connected to any of the county’s outbreaks.

32 new coronavirus cases were reported in Caldwell County, increasing the total to 848. 18 Caldwell County residents were hospitalized and at least least 400 patients had recovered. Just over seven percent of the COVID-19 tests in Caldwell County have come back positive. The death rate in Caldwell County is just under 1.2%.

Gateway Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Lenoir had two employees test positive for COVID-19, which meets the state’s standard for an outbreak. The facility has tested all of their residents and staff and is working closely with the Health Department to stop the spread of the virus in their facilities. This is the fifth coronavirus-related outbreak in Caldwell County.

42 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed Wednesday in Burke County, increasing the total to 1,410, with 25 deaths. There were nine people in the hospital as of Wednesday, and 1,055 patients had recovered. There were 339 active cases, 10.3% of the coronavirus tests conducted in Burke County have come back positive, and the death rate is 1.8%.
