Taylorsville Native Hollar Earns 1000th Career Win in LR Softball Sweeps Over Mars Hill

Head Coach Shena Hollar earned her 1000th career win in the Bears sweep of Mars Hill. The Bears defeated the Lions 8-0 in game one for the 999th career win then the Bears defeated Mars Hill 6-0 for Hollar’s 1000th career win. Hollar in her 25th season here in Hickory won her 955th game as a Bear and her 1000th career win as she becomes the 8th active coach in NCAA Division II to reach the 1,000 win milestone.

Lauren Rakes threw a two-hit complete game in the opener. Rakes struck out 14 Lions allowing just two hits and two walks to pick up win number 11 on the season. Rakes helped herself as she hit a grand slam in the third inning to give the Bears a 6-0 lead.

Rakes then added her 5th RBI of the game with a single in the 5th inning. The Bears walked it off when Katelyn Rackard scored on a fielding error in the sixth inning invoking the mercy rule.

In game two, with the Bears nursing a 1-0 lead, LR used the long ball in the 4th inning as Lora Beth Wood and Madison Wilson both hit two-run homers in the inning. Kaylan Brown had a RBI single in between the homeruns as LR scored five runs in the 4th inning. Wilson threw the complete game shutout in the circle allowing four hits and striking out seven.

The Bears move to 14-2 when they hit at least two homeruns in a game. Julia Mardigian had her 17 multi-hit game with two hits in the first game. Rakes joins Mardigian and Wood with a 5 RBI game this season. The shutouts were WIlson’s second of the season and Rakes third.

Including this series, the Bears have won 18 straight games in a row against Mars Hill in Hickory.

Rakes moves into 6th with 56 wins passing Brandi Hole on the career wins list.

Hollar’s first win came in 1998 at Newberry. Hollar won 45 games as held coach of the Wolves. Hollar’s first win as the Head Coach for the Bears came on February 12th, 2000 against Lees-McRae.

Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 29-7 overall, 6-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Bears will hit the road for six games in four days starting with a trip to Catawba on Tuesday. First-pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
