Taylorsville Man Found with Two Explosive Devices

31-year-old Robert Alan Goins of Taylorsville has been arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a weapon of mass destruction and single counts of possession of a schedule II controlled substance, possession of a schedule VI controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

He was arrested in connection with an incident at about 9:20 p.m. on Sunday, April 7. At that time, Alexander County 9-1-1 took a call regarding stolen property on Fowler Hill Road in Taylorsville. Officers found the stolen property and also found a possible explosive device.

The Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called to assist. Because of the proximity to the Millersville Baptist Church, the staff was contacted. The Millersville Christian Academy and Millersville Child Development Center made plans to open school on a two-hour delay.

The bomb squad arrived at about 8:30 a.m. on April 8. Bomb technicians found that the explosive device was live. As the search continued, a second explosive device was located. Both devices were rendered safe.

The Sheriff’s Office and Millersville Baptist Church staff worked together to ensure the safety of all involved. The School and Child Development were later closed for the day.

Goins was placed in the Alexander County Detention Center without bond. An initial court appearance was set for April 15.

The arrest is at least the third for Goins in Alexander County since February. He was arrested by Taylorsville Police on March 26 and charged with breaking & entering. On February 19, Goins was arrested by Alexander County Sheriff’s Officers and charged with larceny. He was also served with a warrant for failure to appear on a charge of failure to report an accident.
