Suspects Charged With Drug Offenses Following Traffic Stop

51-year-old Angela Powell Carpenter of Powerhouse Road and 65-year-old Clyde Oliver Crawford of Lail Road, both from Morganton, were arrested Saturday (March 2) by Morganton Public Safety Officers.

Carpenter is charged with possession of cocaine, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and traffic offenses. Crawford is charged with possession of cocaine, possession with intent to manufacture sell or deliver marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of carrying a concealed firearm.

On Saturday, Officers with the Morganton Department of Public Safety conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for an expired registration plate and for the registered owner’s license being suspended. As a K-9 unit arrived to assist in a narcotics investigation, the driver, Carpenter, said she had crack cocaine in her vehicle.

A search of the vehicle and occupants resulted in the discovery of substances that tested positive for crack cocaine, meth, and marijuana. Along with these items, drug paraphernalia and 2 firearms were also seized from the vehicle.

It was discovered that there were 11 pending charges against Carpenter including a counts of possession of a schedule II controlled substance, possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Due to these pending charges, Carpenter was placed in the Burke County Jail under no bond. Crawford was jailed in that facility under a $35,000 secured bond. A first appearance in court was scheduled today (March 4) for both suspects.
