In the early morning hours of June 2, Iredell County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence in the Troutman area after receiving a report that a vehicle had just been stolen from the caller’s driveway. Deputies gathered information about the stolen car and immediately began searching the area.

A short time later, Iredell County deputies spotted the stolen vehicle being driven through downtown Statesville. When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to pull over and led deputies on a short vehicle pursuit. The driver crashed the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Deputies were unsuccessful in finding the suspect, however they were able to find evidence inside the stolen vehicle that belonged to the suspect.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received additional reports the same day of several car break-ins in northern Iredell County and in the Troutman area, and a second vehicle stolen from a residence in northern Iredell County.

Detectives conducted several interviews and examined the evidence recovered from the stolen car and were able to identify a 15-year-old male juvenile as the suspect who had been driving the stolen car and breaking into the vehicles throughout the night.

Potts was identified as the second suspect in the case. It was discovered Potts had assisted the juvenile with the car break-ins and had stolen the second vehicle. Detectives obtained arrest warrants for Potts and he was taken into custody last Thursday (June 6). After conducting interviews with both suspects, Detectives were able to recover the second stolen vehicle in northern Iredell County.

Potts was jailed in the Iredell County Detention Center under a $55,000 secured bond. A District Court date is set for June 26. This investigation is still ongoing and further charges may be pending.
