Suspect Released From Prison Last Year Jailed This Week On Multiple Charges

44-year-old James Ashley Sweet of Taylorsville was arrested Tuesday (April 11) by authorities in Alexander County. He’s charged with felony counts of probation violation and habitual larceny.

Sweet was placed in custody on February 16 on a warrant for parole violation. As WHKY previously reported, he had been released from prison in August of 2023 after serving a 14 year sentence after being convicted of charges including felony counts of breaking and entering, larceny, and larceny of motor vehicles.

Sweet was the victim of a shooting on the evening of January 21 at a location on McAlpin Lane in Alexander County. 58-year-old Christopher Michael Carlay of Taylorsville, was arrested at the scene and charged with the shooting. Carlay is free on bond and is scheduled to make an Alexander County District Court appearance next Monday (April 15).

Sweet has charges awaiting trial in Wilkes County for felony and misdemeanor larceny. He also has a court date scheduled in New Hanover County on April 30 for multiple counts of felony habitual larceny. He was being held in the Alexander County Detention Center under no bond. His next Alexander County District Court date is scheduled next Monday.
