Suspect Charged with Fleeing from Police, Illegal Possession of Weapon [UPDATED 2:30 p.m.]

26-year-old Keith Eugene Lackey Jr. of Wilmington Avenue in Statesville has been arrested on charges from the Statesville Police Department and the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office charged Lackey with felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was also charged with fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle.

Events leading to Lackey’s arrest began in the early morning hours today (May 11) as Statesville Police pursued a vehicle and then canceled the chase near Amity Hill Road. The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office was asked to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

A short time later, a Deputy spotted an S.U.V. matching the suspect vehicle description on Highway 150. The vehicle had no operating rear lights. The Deputy stopped the vehicle on East Plaza Drive at Norman Station Boulevard.

When Deputies approached the S.U.V., they saw an A.K. pistol in plain sight in the back seat. The driver was identified as Keith Eugene Lackey, Jr. While checking the suspect’s records, Deputies determined that Lackey is a convicted felon. The vehicle was towed by the Statesville Police Department and Lackey was taken into custody.

Lackey was placed in the Iredell County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond. No court dates on the latest charges are currently listed, though Lackey has multiple District and Superior court appearances scheduled in Iredell County on a variety of charges.

Lackey has a criminal history that includes two counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and reckless driving to endanger, along with misdemeanor counts of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
