Suspect Charged With Felony Offenses After Attempting To Avoid Checking Station

36-year-old Enrique Jose Pascual of Morganton was arrested Monday (May 20) by Morganton Public Safety Officers. He’s charged with felony counts of habitual driving while impaired and possession of schedule VI controlled substance along with counts of driving while impaired and driving while license revoked.

On Monday, Officers with the Morganton Department of Public Safety were conducting a motor vehicle checking station on East Meeting Street near Huffman Street. At approximately 9:50 p.m., a red Honda passenger car reportedly attempted to avoid the checking station and also committed several motor vehicle violations. Officers caught up to the vehicle and performed a vehicle stop to further investigate. After completing the investigation, officers arrested Pascual and charged him with the previously mentioned offenses.

A records check revealed that Pascual had been convicted of misdemeanor DWI on at least three occasions in the last ten years. Under North Carolina General Statute, a person commits the offense of habitual impaired driving if he drives while impaired and has been convicted of three or more offenses involving impaired driving within 10 years of the date of this offense. The vehicle that Pascual was operating was also seized.

Pascual was transported to the Burke County Magistrates office where he received a $10,000 secured bond. He was not listed as an inmate in Burke County today (May 22). Pascual’s first court appearance was scheduled Tuesday (May 21).
