Suspect Arrested Following Reported Chase And Crash

31-year-old Rateshia Gennell Brown of Morganton was arrested Thursday (April 18) by Morganton Public Safety Officers. She’s charged with  felony speeding to elude arrest, larceny of property, possession of stolen property, failure to maintain lane control, and injury to real property.

On Thursday, shortly after 10:30 a.m., Public Safety Officers were dispatched to Walmart regarding a larceny.  Information was given about the suspect’s physical description and vehicle. An officer was conducting stationary patrol within the shopping center and saw the suspect vehicle driving at a high rate of speed through the parking lot. A vehicle stop was initiated at the upper exit at West Fleming Drive.

After initially stopping, the suspect took off in her vehicle and began to flee at a high rate of speed on West Fleming Drive. The brief vehicle pursuit ended when the suspect lost control attempting to turn left onto Golf Course Road. The vehicle came to a stop after colliding with the curb and a concrete right-of-way marker. The suspect continued to struggle with officers before being taking into custody. 

The driver was identified as Rateshia Genell Brown. Further investigation resulted in the discovery of stolen merchandise from Walmart inside the vehicle valued at $614.22. 

Brown was confined in the Burke County Jail under a $20,000 secured bond. A District Court date was scheduled today (April 19).
