Statesville Wastewater Smoke Testing Underway This Week

STATESVILLE, N.C. (WHKY)  — Residents in parts of Statesville may notice smoke coming from sewer vents over the next several days as the city conducts routine testing of its wastewater collection system.

City officials say Statesville and contractor Gavel and Dorn Engineering began smoke testing Tuesday, July 28, to help identify leaks, breaks, and improper connections within the sewer system. The project is expected to continue for about one week, weather permitting.

Officials emphasize the smoke is non-toxic, non-staining, nearly odorless, and poses no danger to people, pets, or plants. Crews will not need to enter homes or businesses during the testing.

If smoke is seen inside a building, city officials say it may indicate a dry drain trap or another plumbing issue that should be inspected.

Anyone with questions about the project may contact the City of Statesville at 704-832-3823.
