Statesville Man Charged with Assault with Intent to Kill

65-year-old Richard Todd Lemons of Little Valley Lane in Statesville was arrested by Iredell County Sheriff’s Deputies Saturday (May 25) on six felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and six misdemeanor counts of communicating threats.

On Saturday, a caller told emergency communications that neighbors on Little Valley Lane (west of Statesville) were arguing and shots had been fired. While en route, Deputies were told that Richard Todd Lemons was the person firing shots. Upon arrival, Deputies immediately located Lemons, who was armed with a handgun. He was given commands to drop the weapon and surrender, which he did without further incident.

After speaking with neighbors and taking multiple statements from witnesses, Deputies learned that Lemons had become angry with his neighbors for playing music and setting off fireworks. He then reportedly fired shots at a group of people who were outside the home.

One of the victims spoke to Lemons in an attempt to de-escalate the situation; however, Lemons pointed the handgun at the individual and continued firing. One victim did return fire, but no one was seriously injured.

Lemons was jailed in the Iredell County Detention Center under a $60,000 secured bond. He’ll appear in District Court on June 12.
