For a few tense hours Saturday afternoon, South Caldwell’s dream of a state championship was in jeopardy.

After taking the opener of the best-of-three NCHSAA 6A Softball State Championship Series on Friday, the Spartans needed just one more win to secure the title. Instead, Union Pines forced a decisive third game with a 5-4 victory in Game 2.

The Vikings wasted little time putting pressure on South Caldwell ace Maddy Moore. Union Pines scored twice in the first inning and added three more runs in the second to build a 5-0 advantage. The Vikings collected 11 hits in the contest, with Sydney McCutchen leading the way by going 3-for-3. Abby Jessup drove in two runs while Karsyn Blue helped her own cause with an RBI hit.

South Caldwell refused to go quietly.

The Spartans got on the board in the third inning when Moore delivered the biggest swing of the game, launching a two-run homer that trimmed the deficit to 5-2. Moore finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, accounting for all four South Caldwell runs.

Mckenna Yount sparked the offense throughout the afternoon, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Mallory Winebarger added a pair of hits.

The Spartans mounted one final rally in the seventh inning. Yount’s double helped ignite the comeback effort before Moore struck again with a two-run triple, bringing South Caldwell within a run at 5-4. However, Union Pines pitcher Karsyn Blue recorded the final out to preserve the victory and force a winner-take-all finale.

Despite the loss, South Caldwell showed the resilience that had carried it throughout the postseason, nearly erasing a five-run deficit and setting the stage for one final showdown.

The Spartans turned the decisive third game into a championship celebration, rolling to an 8-0 victory over Union Pines to claim the NCHSAA 6A State Championship.

After seeing their title hopes delayed just a few hours earlier, South Caldwell responded with its most complete performance of the season. The Spartans struck early, added on throughout the night, and dominated in every phase of the game.

Moore once again led the charge, continuing a remarkable championship series with another strong performance in the circle and at the plate. The South Caldwell offense provided plenty of support, piling up runs while the defense backed its pitching staff with a clean effort.

The Spartans’ ability to quickly regroup after the heartbreaking Game 2 loss proved to be the defining story of the day. Rather than dwelling on the missed opportunity, South Caldwell came out aggressive from the opening pitch and never allowed Union Pines to gain any momentum.

The championship capped a remarkable season for the Spartans, who navigated one of the state’s toughest playoff brackets and delivered when the stakes were highest. After splitting the first two games of the series, South Caldwell saved its best performance for last, shutting out the Vikings and bringing the 6A state championship trophy back to Hudson.

For South Caldwell, the season ends with a record of 27-4 and the Spartans are back-to-back state champions as they won the 4A class title last season.
