Playing in their South Atlantic Conference opener, the Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Lacrosse Team got a seven-goal effort from Suzy Smith in an 18-10 win over Coker on Wednesday evening. The seven goals from Smith tied for the fifth-most in a single game in Lenoir-Rhyne history. Smith’s previous career-high in goals was four against UVA Wise on March 6, 2020.
Michelle Tang and Ellie Campbell got the scoring started for LR before Coker got on the board. A 5-0 scoring run led by three goals from Smith pushed the LR advantage to 7-1. Coker had the answer and netted five of the next six goals in the contest to cut the lead to 8-6.
LR came out firing after the break, scoring nine unanswered goals. Eight different players scored for the Bears in that spurt.
The Bears held a 34-23 advantage in shots on the night and went 15-for-16 in clears. The Bears won 14 of the 25 draw controls.
Campbell had three goals on three shots and added seven draw controls. Tang had a pair of goals. Cathleen Gaffney dished out three assists in the game to push her over 100 for her career.
The Bears are 7-1 all-time against Coker and have scored 18 goals in each of the last two matchups with the Cobras.
This was Lenoir-Rhyne’s first road game since playing at Coker on April 20, 2019 to close out the regular season. Since then, LR had all six games in 2020 at home and the first two of 2021.
Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they host Limestone at 4 p.m.
