Singleton Shines as App State Football Rolls Past Maine 55-3 in Season Opener
BOONE, N.C. (WHKY) – Appalachian State opened the 2026 football season in dominating fashion Saturday, piling up 647 yards of offense and allowing only three points in a 55-3 victory over Maine before a sellout crowd of 33,664 at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Quarterback Malachi Singleton made an impressive debut as the Mountaineers’ starter, completing 22-of-24 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. His 91.7 percent completion rate was the third-best single-game mark in program history among quarterbacks with more than 10 completions.
After an opening possession ended with a fumble at the Maine 18-yard line, App State scored on each of its remaining nine possessions.
Treyaun Webb opened the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. James London added a 31-yard field goal early in the second before Singleton and the Mountaineer passing game took over.
Singleton connected with Darrin Fugitt for a five-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 17-0. He then found Sam Pickett III twice for scores, first from 14 yards and then from seven yards with seven seconds remaining before halftime, sending the Mountaineers into the locker room with a 31-0 advantage.
Pickett, making his first start for App State, finished as the Mountaineers’ leading receiver with five catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Fugitt caught four passes for 47 yards and a score as Singleton spread the ball around to an App State offense that had 12 different players record a reception.
The Mountaineers continued to pull away after halftime.
Colton Phares intercepted Maine quarterback Eddie Buehler early in the third quarter, and App State turned the takeaway into a seven-play, 69-yard drive capped by Jaquari Lewis’ 12-yard touchdown run.
Maine finally broke up the shutout with a 40-yard field goal late in the third quarter, but App State added 17 more points in the fourth. Nate Branch scored on a 36-yard run, Jackson Grier followed with a 28-yard touchdown run and London completed the scoring with a 32-yard field goal.
App State finished with 647 yards of total offense, including 299 on the ground and 348 through the air. The Mountaineers averaged 7.7 yards per rushing attempt and completed 29-of-33 passes as a team. They recorded 34 first downs and did not punt.
The defense was equally impressive, holding Maine to 250 total yards and only 52 on the ground. The Black Bears managed just 12 first downs and did not reach the end zone. Phares and Caleb Pitts each intercepted a pass, while the Mountaineers recorded eight tackles for loss and two sacks.
The 52-point margin was App State’s largest since a 72-7 victory over Gardner-Webb in 2018. The Mountaineers also won a season opener for the seventh time in the last eight years and improved to 1-0 in their second season under head coach Dowell Loggains.
The schedule gets significantly tougher next week. App State travels to Greenville to face East Carolina on Saturday at noon. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
