Sex Offender Charged With Failing To Register

52-year-old Timothy Matthew Shelnut of Steakhouse Road in Morganton was arrested Monday (February 26) by Burke County Sheriff’s Officers. He’s charged with felony failure to register as a sex offender.

Shelnut is a sex offender as a result of multiple convictions in Burke County. According to the North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry, in May, 2017 he was convicted of solicitation of a child by computer to commit an unlawful sex act and attempted indecent liberties with a minor. In July of 2019 Shelnut was convicted of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. He served just under three years in prison following the 2019 conviction.

Shelnut was arrested shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday at his residence. He was brought to the Burke County Jail and incarcerated under $2,000 secured bond. He remained in jail as of earlier today (February 29). A District Court appearance is scheduled for March 18.
