At about 11:15 this morning (December 30), the N.C. State Highway Patrol responded to an accident in Iredell County on I-40 West at mile-marker 147 near the Stamey Farm Road exit. A westbound 2003 Chevrolet S-10 ran off the road to the left, collided with the median guardrail, and then collided with a westbound 2018 Subaru Forester. In an attempt to avoid the initial collision, a 2010 Freightliner moving truck swerved, collided with the guardrail, and overturned in the travel lanes. The contents of the moving truck were spilled and both lanes were blocked.
The Chevy was driven by 26-year-old Derek Scott Young Frye of Wichita, Kansas. He was transported by Iredell County E.M.S. to Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville with minor injuries. He has been charged with failure to maintain lane control.
The Subaru was driven by 62-year-old Robert Lee Grant of Statesville. He was transported by to Iredell Memorial with serious injuries. A 63-year-old passenger was also transported with minor injuries. The Freightliner was driven by 37-year-old Steven Michael Knight of Lynchburg, Virginia. He sustained minor injuries.
I-40 West was closed for approximately two hours until one lane could be re-opened. The right lane was closed for an extended time to allow for ongoing cleanup efforts.
