Second Accident Shuts Down Hwy. 321 [UPDATED 5:05 p.m.]

The Highway Patrol reports a second accident on Highway 321 this afternoon (May 15).

Troopers are on the scene of a collision that occurred at approximately 12:10 p.m. on the northbound side of U.S. 321 at N.C. 10 (mile-marker 37). Several vehicles were involved and one person was transported by medical helicopter with life-threatening injuries.

The crash follows an earlier accident that occurred at approximately 11:15 this morning on the southbound side of U.S. 321 near-mile marker 38. An 18-wheeler overturned onto its left side and came to rest in the median.

As of about 2:30 this afternoon, the Highway Patrol reported that all southbound lanes of U.S. 321 had re-opened. The northbound left lane of U.S. 321 near N.C. 10 remained closed at that time due to cleanup from the earlier collision involving the 18-wheeler. The N.C.D.O.T. had set up signs and cones to alert drivers. Delays were expected in the area. The cleanup was expected to take about two-to-three hours to complete, which would mean that the highway should now be fully re-opened.
