The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office has seen an increase in the number of reported phone scams and other fraudulent acts which have resulted in the loss of money to some area citizens. People who are believed to be operating out of foreign countries, are fraudulently representing themselves to potential victims who they call in hopes of obtaining money. These scams often involve requests for victims to purchase gift cards and other transferable forms of payment.
The Sheriff’s Office is offering the following tips and information that could help you avoid being victimized by this scam. Be highly suspicious of anyone calling you from a number you do not recognize and do not give any money to anyone without independently verifying their identity. Also Government agencies will not request that you purchase gift cards.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and other government sponsored collection agencies do not call from random and or foreign area codes. Also if you are unsure of the legitimacy of someone who has contacted you please contact law enforcement before giving them any money.
If anyone has any questions about these phone scams or any other questions concerning crime prevention tips, please contact The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office Community and Support Services Division at 828-464-5241.
