Savannah College of Art and Design Artist’s MFA Exhibition Opens in Hickory Gallery

Artist Alison Miller Willard’s exhibition Unicorns Are Real: The Materiality, Magic, and Mayhem of Motherhood is now on public display. The body of artwork is the culmination of 5 years of intense study and artistry culminating in candidacy for a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design.

Original Artwork, reproductions, and other specially created materials are available for purchase during the exhibition which runs from April 12 through May 24 at Fanjoy Labrenz Studio and Melissa Gibson Frame Gallery in Downtown Hickory, NC.
Willard’s work features two large modular painted landscapes known as myrioramas that harken back to storytelling card games from the Victorian Era. Additional highlights are large scale paintings with vivid colors and printed fabrics that spotlight the poignancy and reality of modern motherhood and the observation of children through the dual perspective of creator and parent. A premier artist in the North Carolina foothills, Willard’s art brims with stories, emotion, and mystery that will resonate with audiences of all ages.

Her current works explore various traditional mediums including oils, watercolor, acrylics, drawing, and photography meshed with non traditional mediums including glitter, rhinestones, and printed fabrics. Willard’s artwork has appeared in local, regional, and national juried exhibitions and has been featured in regional publications. Willard is a graduate of Hickory High School and Appalachian State University.

Willard lives in Hickory with her two children, husband, and guard dog. She has 20 years experience in arts education and has been an artist her entire life.
