Sanford, N.C. Man Charged Following Reported Chase In Alexander County

20-year-old Amari Rayvon Matos of Sanford, N.C. was arrested Wednesday (May 25) by authorities in Alexander County. He’s charged with felony counts of flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and possession of methamphetamine. Matos is also charged with possession of schedule VI controlled substance, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, carrying a concealed gun, possession of stolen goods, driving while license revoked, and speeding in excess of 130 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone.

According to police reports, the suspect led Taylorsville Police and Alexander County Sheriff’s Deputies on a chase that ended in a crash on Wednesday. Police learned that a car reported as stolen in Greensboro was in Taylorsville. An Officer spotted the suspect 2007 BMW.

The driver of the car accelerated and refused to stop for blue lights and siren on U.S. 64 East. Police attempted to perform a rolling road-block near Adams Pond Lane but the car continued east. The BMW was clocked at speeds in excess of 130 miles per hour and continued into Iredell County where it attempted to turn onto Lippard Farm Road. The driver lost control, hit a ditch and went airborne before coming to rest upside down. The operator (only occupant) of the car was pinned in the wreckage.

Matos was freed from the wreckage and taken into custody until Alexander EMS arrived. Matos was transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem where he was treated and released. He was placed in the Alexander County Detention Center under a secured bond of $150,000 with an initial court appearance scheduled for June 5.
