Registered Sex Offender From Newton Charged With Being On Premises Illegally

41-year-old Joseph Edward Morin of Flora Drive in Newton was arrested Wednesday (December 6) by Catawba County Sheriff’s Officers. He’s charged with sex offender on child premises.

Morin is listed on the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation’s Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry as a result of multiple convictions. He was convicted in Catawba County in April of 2018 with third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. He received a sentence of three years, eight months to nine years, five months. Morin was released from custody in December, 2021. He was also convicted of criminal sexual conduct in Van Buren, Michigan in March of 1998.

According to the North Carolina Department Of Adult Correction Offender Public Information website, Morin’s criminal history in this state includes convictions dating back to 2015. Listed among those cases is a conviction in Catawba County for felony possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine precursor. He served 13 months in jail before being granted parole.

Following Wednesday’s arrest, Morin was confined in the Catawba County Detention Facility under $25,000 bond. He remained in jail as of earlier today (December 7). A District Court appearance was scheduled today in Newton.
