Prison Sentence Imposed In Connection To Fatal Shooting In 2018

A Morganton man was sentenced to a minimum of just over three years in prison in connection to a fatal shooting more than four years ago. 37-year-old David Andrew Barnes was sentenced Monday (March 27) in Burke County Superior Court. He received between three years, two months and four years, ten months in prison. Barnes also got credit for 210 days of time served.

As WHKY previously reported, earlier this year, Barnes entered a guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter in Burke County Superior Court. At that time sentencing was scheduled for March 27. He was charged in connection to the August 2018 shooting death of 49-year-old Roger Dewayne Hoglan of Hildebran.

According to law enforcement reports, Barnes and Hoglan got into an argument at a home on Costner Road in eastern Burke County on Aug. 15, 2018. Reports state that Hoglan got in his car while Barnes was standing near the back of it. Barnes and a witness said Hoglan started to back the car up. Barnes said he believed Hoglan was trying to run him over, and Hoglan ran over Barnes’ foot, according to reports. The victim’s body was found inside the vehicle.
