Powell Garners App’s Third Sun Belt Women’s Tennis Player of the Week Award of the Season

App State Tennis freshman Taya Powell was awarded Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Wednesday. Powell’s accolade is App State’s second consecutive honor, following sophomore Savannah Dada-Mascoll last week, and third honor this season.

This marks just the third time in App State Tennis history that the Mountaineers have had back-to-back winners, most recently in the 2020 and 2019 campaigns.

The North Tamworth, Australia, native went a perfect 3-0 in App State’s home conference matches last weekend against Georgia State and Troy. Powell defeated Georgia State’s Alba Retortillo Soiras on Saturday, in a tie-break second set thriller, 6-3, 7-6 [7-5] on Court 2. The Aussie then continued her momentum into Sunday with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Troy’s No. 2 singles player Maria Guirguis. Powell, along with her No. 1 doubles partner, Maggie Pate, clinched the doubles point for App State over Troy’s Kristina Kukaras/Maria Guirguis, 6-4, in Sunday’s match.

Powell currently has a 6-2 overall singles record this spring, and is 5-2 as the primary No. 2 singles player. She also notched a win on the No. 1 court this season.

The Mountaineers will be back in action on March 26, as they face ULM on the road. App State will then turn around to play Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark. on March 27, before returning home to close out the month of March with a pair of matches against Louisiana on March 29 and Texas State on March 30. Both home matches are slated for 10 a.m. starts.
