The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Catawba County and the Hickory Metro area, warning that dangerous heat conditions are expected Thursday afternoon (July 2).

Forecasters say the advisory will be in effect from noon until 8 p.m. Thursday, with high temperatures near 100 degrees and heat index values as high as 106 degrees. The advisory also includes portions of northeast Georgia and the North Carolina Piedmont.

Officials warn that the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity could lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for people who spend extended periods outdoors. Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned buildings when possible, avoid direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, and check on relatives and neighbors who may be vulnerable to the heat.

The National Weather Service also reminds drivers never to leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, as temperatures inside a car can become deadly within minutes.
