Police Searching For Individual(s) Involved In Fatal Crash

A man was killed in a crash in Statesville earlier this week and police are searching for the individual involved in the collision. On Tuesday (July 21), shortly before 11 p.m. 26-year-old Zarrie Edward James of Statesville was operating a mini dirt bike on Alexander Street when he was struck by a black 2004 Volkswagen Touareg. The VW had a North Carolina license tag reading FLK5153.

The Volkswagen was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the dirt bike. The initial collision occurred in front of 912 Alexander Street which is close to Long Street. The Volkswagen continued to travel eastbound in the westbound lane of Alexander Street striking a gas pipe line on the shoulder. It continued traveling eastbound on the westbound shoulder striking a tree in front of 824 Alexander Street where it came to rest facing west.

It was unknown if Mr. James was wearing a helmet or not. The dirt bike appeared to have a makeshift white light attached to the front and a makeshift red light attached to the rear. Initial witnesses said they saw a black female and a black male with dreadlocks fleeing the scene heading south on North Patterson Street.
