Parents Charged With Murder In Connection To Death Of Three-Month-Old Child
IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (WHKY) – The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office has issued murder charges against the parents of a three-month-old infant whose death was determined to have resulted from caregiver neglect.
According to Sheriff Darren Campbell, deputies and first responders were called Wednesday, May 13, 2026, to a home at 1029 Brawley School Road after receiving a report that CPR was in progress on a three-month-old female infant. First responders immediately began life-saving measures before the infant was transported to Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital, where hospital personnel later pronounced her deceased.
During the investigation, detectives collected evidence indicating the infant had lost approximately one-third of her body weight since birth and was suffering from severe malnourishment and dehydration, according to the sheriff’s office. Investigators determined that the infant’s parents, Kendal Lee Hayes and Glenn John Delgreco II, as well as her grandparents, Alice Loraine Evans and Thomas Virgil Evans, lived in the home and shared responsibility for the child’s care, well-being and safety.
The sheriff’s office said the infant displayed significant and apparent signs of medical distress but was not provided necessary medical treatment before her death. As a result, detectives obtained warrants charging Hayes, Delgreco, Evans and Evans with felony child abuse and aiding and abetting. On June 11, 2026, Iredell County deputies served all four suspects with the outstanding warrants without incident. They were transported to and held at the Iredell County Detention Center.
The investigation continued, including an autopsy performed at Wake Forest Medical Center. According to the sheriff’s office, the autopsy determined the infant’s cause of death was severe protein-calorie malnutrition due to caregiver neglect. The manner of death was ruled a homicide. On Sept. 2, investigators presented evidence and the autopsy findings to the Iredell County Grand Jury. After hearing the evidence, the grand jury returned indictments charging the infant’s parents, Hayes, who is 34-years-old and Delgreco, who is 33-years-old, with felony first-degree murder.
On Tuesday, Sept. 15, Hayes and Delgreco were served with the murder indictments while being held at the Iredell County Detention Center. Both suspects were being held without bond on the new charges. The case remains under investigation.
