Owner of Stolen Vehicle Assists in Nabbing Suspect

James Edward Staley, Jr., who is listed as a homeless person, has been arrested by Morganton Public Safety Officers on charges of larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

At about 5:40 this morning (May 14) a local resident called to report his vehicle stolen from Circle Court, near the downtown area. While Officers were en route, the reporting party told Burke Communications that he had observed the stolen vehicle and followed it. The victim followed his stolen vehicle onto a dead end road where the offender was boxed in and was unable to leave.

Officers arrived and removed James Edward Staley, Jr. from the vehicle. A search of Staley’s person and property led to the discovery of drug paraphernalia, as well as documents that belonged to the owner of the stolen vehicle.

Staley, was already out on bond from a previous charge, was jailed without bond. Bond on the current charges will be set pending a first appearance in court.
