Out Of State Residents Jailed In Alexander County On Felony, Misdemeanor Theft Charges

26-year-old Thomas Cornelius Phifer of Flint, Michigan and 24-year-old Clyde Childress III of Nashville, Tennessee were arrested Wednesday (April 12) by Taylorsville Police Officers. Both suspects are charged with felony obtaining property by false pretense and misdemeanor larceny.

The two suspects are charged in connection to an investigation conducted Wednesday by Taylorsville Police. The probe was in connection to an incident at the Family Dollar Store on Highway 90 West. Two men had entered the store and fraudulently obtained money from an issued gift card and left the store. The clerk gave Police a description of the two suspects.

It was learned that the duo had allegedly attempted to do the same thing at other locations including the Taylorsville Dollar General. At approximately 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, the suspects were spotted at Dollar General in Stony Point. When Alexander County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived along with Taylorsville Police, one of the men attempted to flee the scene on foot. He was quickly captured.

Both suspects were placed in the Alexander County Detention Center under $20,000 secured bond apiece. They remained in jail as of earlier today (April 14). Both suspects are scheduled to appear in District Court in Taylorsville next Monday (April 17).

According to Taylorsville Police Chief Douglas Bowman, the suspects might have been involved in similar crimes in neighboring Iredell County and perhaps other locations, including in other states.
