One Person Killed in Friday Night Accident in Iredell County

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigation a fatal single-vehicle crash in Iredell County. The deceased is 60-year-old Robert Douglas Shumate of Union Grove.

The accident happened at about 9:25 Friday night (June 17) on N.C. Highway 901 near Jennings Road (not far from the Union Grove Fire Department). An eastbound 2013 Toyota Tacoma on N.C. 901 ran off the road to the right, struck a mailbox, crossed back over the roadway, ran off the road to the left, collided with a large brick sign, and overturned.

The driver, 27-year-old Cheyanna Pardue of Hamptonville, and a 28-year-old female passenger were injured. Mr. Shumate, who was also a passenger in the vehicle, passed away at the scene.

The Highway Patrol’s initial investigation indicates alcohol impairment as a contributing factor. Pardue has been charged with driving while impaired, driving while license revoked, and a seatbelt violation. Further charges are pending the ongoing investigation and consultation with the Iredell County District Attorney’s Office.
