The N.C. State Highway Patrol responded to a fatal collision in Lincoln County yesterday (February 15). The accident happened at about 4:20 p.m. Monday on N.C. Highway 18, near N.C. Highway 10.
A southbound 2018 Chevrolet Silverado crossed the centerline on Highway 18 and collided with a northbound 2016 Freightliner box truck. After impact, both vehicles were engulfed in flames. The driver of the Freightliner, a 29-year-old Conover man, escaped the vehicle and was not injured. The driver of the Chevrolet was unable to exit the vehicle and died at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been released.
The box truck was hauling tires that burned for an extended period of time after the crash. The roadway was closed for approximately four hours.
The initial on-scene investigation indicates that alcohol impairment and speeding on the part of the deceased were contributing factors in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
