North Carolina Recognizes Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month

RALEIGH, N.C. (WHKY) — North Carolina is recognizing the contributions of Hispanic and Latino residents during a monthlong observance running September 15 through October 15. Governor Josh Stein celebrated the occasion Monday at the North Carolina Executive Mansion and issued a proclamation recognizing Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month.

Stein highlighted contributions to business, education, culture and public service, saying Hispanic and Latino residents strengthen North Carolina throughout the year.

North Carolina Department of Administration Secretary Gabriel J. Esparza, the state’s first Latino cabinet official, encouraged residents to recognize the people whose leadership and service help move the state forward.

The proclamation recognizes contributions across agriculture, manufacturing, construction, technology, education and health care. It also highlights the Governor’s Advisory Council on Latino Affairs, established in 2025 to advise on issues affecting Latino residents and recommend ways to address challenges and expand opportunities.

The observance coincides with September independence anniversaries in several Latin American countries, including Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Chile.
